What is the Procedure Text?

Procedure text is a text that gives us orders or instructions to do something. Usually this type of text begins with the sentence "How to...", for example "How to make a cup of tea" or "How to operate the machine". Procedure Text can be found in many recipe book and manuals.


What Is The Function Of pRocedure Text?

The purpose of the procedure text is to explain the steps in carrying out a particular activity.


Type Of Procedure Text 

Procedure text in English has several types. Here are 3 types of procedure text that you should know.

  • Procedure text that explains how something works or how to use an instruction/operation manual, for example, how to use a computer, how to record video, how to use polaroid camera.
  • Procedure text that instructs how to do certain activities, for example, how to make a noodle, how to dance, how to play basketball.
  • Procedure text related to human behavior, for example, how to succed, how to live happily, how to be a good person.

Language Features Of Pricedure Text 
  • Usually uses Simple Present Tense with the formula (S+V1).
  • Imperative form/command form.
  • Using action verbs, for example : make, take, boil, cook.
  • Using temporal conjuctions, for example : First, then, next, after that, last.
  • Using conjuctions to sequence activities, for example : then, while, etc.
  • Using adverbs (adverbs) to express detailed time, place, accurate ways, for example for five minutes, 2 hours, etc.
  • Using adverbs (adverbs) to express stages or sequences, for example the first, the second, the third, the last, etc.

Example Of Procedure Text 

HOW TO MAKE FRUIT SALAD



Ingredients:

  • 1 Pear
  • 1 Apple
  • 1 small bottle of Yoghurt
  • 1/2 Melon
  • 5 Strawberries
  • 6 Grapes
  • 3 tablespoons Mayonnaise

Utensils:

  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Bowl
  • Spoon

Step:

  1. First wash the fruits, peel and then seed the fruit if needed.
  2. Slice and cut them in cubes.
  3. Arrange them in a bowl, then pour mayonnaise and yoghurt over it.
  4. Mix them until blended.
  5. Refrigerate them until cold.
  6. Serve cold.
